Since the implementation of the doctoral program in Political Science in 1988, Texas A&M has established itself as one of the premiere locations for advanced political science training in the fields of American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Theory, and Public Policy and Administration. The department regularly appears at or near the top of lists of political science departments in research productivity, especially in the discipline’s leading journals.
The Department of Political Science offers graduate study leading to the degrees of the Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Arts. The Doctor of Philosophy degree is appropriate for those who wish to pursue careers as research scholars in institutions of higher education. The Master of Arts curriculum is appropriate as preparation for more advanced work in political science.
With a carefully controlled admissions policy and a faculty body of nearly 40, the Department affords the opportunity for close student-teacher interaction. Seminars are limited to 15 students and most have enrollments in the 5-10 student range. Students may also take Directed Readings courses that permit students to investigate specialized research topics on a one-to-one basis.
Because the program runs on a twelve-month basis, students are able to finish their doctoral studies more expeditiously than in most departments. Many students entering without Master’s degrees earn their doctorates in four years.
Year after year, Ph.D. graduates from Texas A&M receive offers at some of the best research institutions in the nation, such as University of Iowa, University of Colorado (Boulder), University of Kansas, University of Oklahoma, City University of New York, Arizona State University, Rutgers University, Marquette University, and other prestigious schools. Our students have achieved an outstanding record of gaining employment appropriate to their qualifications and interests.
